The rawhide medicine shield was perhaps the most coveted possession of the Plains Indian Warrior. The Medicine Shield's greatest value lay in its unique sacred powers symbolized on the shield through various handpainted images.
The Soft Leather Studio offers Native American shields done in the traditional manner of handpainting using earth pigments on rawhide.

Symbols
This shield was heavily influenced by an actual Blackfoot shield in the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.
The Buffalo is the Sustainer of Life. The
Plains Indians literally used every part internally
and externally of the Buffalo.
The Black Circles would represent campfires in
this case the number of annual Buffalo hunts
participated in.
The Buffalo Dew Claws would be important as the
shield owner would be an acknowledged leader in
the Buffalo hunt and these would be a tribute to
the Buffalo.
The black line across the shield represented the
separation of heaven and earth.
The painted ring symbolizes the boundary of
the sky and horizon; the four lines pointing outward
from the ring represent the "four paths of the wind,"
the four directions from which the people will
receive help.
